I was on a call with a client yesterday and he was talking about how he's been putting off starting his podcast.
He asked me, "What topic should I focus on that will make me the most money?"
That's not an easy question to answer without a bit more info, so I asked him what he was into.
Turns out, he's interested in a bunch of things, like farming, relationships, politics, and fatherhood.
Now, the safe bet would be to just pick one of those topics and build a show around it, right?
There are pros and cons to everything, and podcasting is no different.
I encouraged him to visualize his podcast as a scene that he's creating in his listeners' minds, rather than just an audio show.
He told me about this tree outside his window that he likes to sit under and think.
Perfect.
I told him to picture his guest and listener sitting with him under that tree during episodes.
Now, how do we make that happen when we only have audio?
Maybe we start each episode with some light music, and take a minute to get grounded before jumping into an interview.
And we only feature guests that he feels a real connection with, so that his listener feels that same connection.
Remember, we’re under a tree having a conversation and it’s a beautiful day out.
If we try and fake anything, all 3 of us are gonna know (the host, the guest, and the listener).
Our chat reminded me how important it is to build your world, then invite the listener into it...not the other way around.
That's how you create a truly unique podcasting experience – a show that's tailored to the host, but also puts connection with the listener front and center.
