My Top 3 Tips for Podcasting While Being Sick
Ever wondered how to keep your podcast running when life throws you a curveball?
I’ve been dealing with the flu for the past week. I’m on the mend now, but there were a few days where I just slept all day.
Usually, I record a fresh episode of 'Digital Podcaster' a few days before its release.
It's a practice that helps me stay connected with the pulse of podcasting, always hunting for the most relevant topics.
Sometimes, though, life happens. Like getting sick. And when it does, we often give ourselves a hard time, right? Missing an episode or not putting out "the usual" can feel like a big fail.
I've got a different way of looking at things I want to share with you...
When I'm under the weather, like now, I see three options:
Push through and record an episode with my flu voice (and trust me, no one wants to hear that!)
Press pause and just rest up.
Rummage through my episode archives for something to publish.
All 3 options are okay. But one really jumped out at me this time...
Digging into my archives.
I've got this folder in my Dropbox called "emergency episodes". It's like my secret stash of episodes I recorded but didn't know when to slot in. I've even got some interviews tucked away.
These episodes are ready to roll, just waiting to be uploaded.
But what if you don't have a stash of emergency episodes?
Here's what I'd do - revisit some of your older episodes, say, 6 months or more back, and pick a good one to republish.
At the end of the day, what really counts is that your episode means something to your listeners. It doesn't matter if it was recorded yesterday, last year, or even 10 years ago.
Does the thought of republishing an older episode make you nervous? Even one of the top podcasts "How I Built This" with Guy Raz republish episodes all the time.
You don't need to be sick or have an emergency to think ahead like this. A little forward planning can save you a load of time and stress and can even work into your regular content plan.
Hope this helps you out... and here's to a great week!

p.s. remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being there for your listeners in whichever way you can.
