This week, I've been deep down a burnout rabbit hole.
This theme has surfaced frequently in discussions with clients, podcasters, and colleagues lately.
I also receive quite a few DMs from people saying they aren’t sure how I accomplish so much.
The truth is, the only way I can achieve so much is by having times when I do nothing.
For years, I ignored the signs of burnout, constantly pushing myself to do more.
I was fearful of the idea of slowing down, thinking that if I stopped, all my momentum would stop.
Basically, I associated balance with boredom.
Over the past couple of years, I've experimented with various strategies.
One thing I consistently return to is the importance of setting boundaries.
There are a few non-negotiables I have these days:
99.99% of the time, I don’t take calls outside of 8am to 4pm.
No meetings on Saturdays or Sundays.
I keep app notifications off on my phone.
Every meeting must have an agenda.
At first, maintaining the boundaries, especially regarding calls, was challenging.
As I built my business from scratch, I felt the need to be constantly engaged in conversations.
Thinking that if I spoke more, those conversations would turn into clients.
It reminds me of the saying, "you can't pour from an empty cup."
Once I began enforcing those boundaries, everything started to shift:
More sales started to roll in for my business.
My brain freed up space to innovate.
Success started to feel inevitable.
If you're grappling with burnout, a problem that reportedly affects 89% of workers, consider prioritizing your boundaries first. Things might just start falling into place.
