Most people are surprised when I mention that I'm an introvert.

I thrive on solitary moments and am at my best with ample time for reflection and rejuvenation.

However, I understand that businesses flourish through relationships, and networking is crucial to building those bonds.

Having recently relocated to a town where I'm unfamiliar with everything — to the point of relying on Google Maps for directions — I wanted a way to build connections.

Last Wednesday, an idea struck me.

Instead of attending energy-sapping networking events, I chose a path more aligned with my strengths.

Inspired by a post from Rich Cardona on LinkedIn, which highlighted an older strategy by Gary Vaynerchuk about becoming the "Digital Mayor" of one's town, I embarked on a journey to start a show highlighting local businesses.

Here’s the approach I’m taking:

  1. Interview local businesses to spotlight their narratives.

  2. Craft short video segments to endorse these businesses on social platforms.

  3. Expect nothing in return from these enterprises.

Though I have a background in generating content for a global audience, this city-centric project is already a refreshing shift.

Within hours of conceptualizing the idea, deciding a name for the podcast, and designing the logo, I posted about my upcoming podcast in a local Facebook Group.

The immediate wave of positive feedback and interest from local community members and businesses was astounding.

Suddenly, from having no contacts, I find myself organizing my network of local entrepreneurs eager to collaborate and share their story.

Curious about my progress? You can check out the landing page here.

Believe me when I say, everything – the name, logo, URL, page – came about in just 3 to 4 hours.

If you can relate to my situation, and the idea of initiating from ground zero and attending networking events feels less than ideal, consider leveraging your strengths and brainstorming a unique approach to relationship-building.

For me, this involves hosting a show spotlighting local businesses.

I won't exclusively focus on this topic in the future, but I'll make sure to keep you updated on what I learn along the way.
