Here’s My #1 Tip for Staying Consistent

A recent study from Loma Linda University in California challenges the notion that rattlesnakes are solitary hunters with little social behavior. The study found that rattlesnakes appear to gain a sense of well-being when they are close to other rattlesnakes, much like humans. “Hey it’s Mr. Pie Thon. Anyways, just called to say I hiss you.” (sorry)

If you've ever struggled with consistency, you might find this helpful...

This email and my podcast never miss a publish date.

I don't see myself as a productivity wizard or more focused than the average person.

In fact, I've got the words "STAY ON TARGET" tattooed on my forearm to remind me to keep focused on what matters.

There are a lot of people I speak with that struggle with publishing.

For many, this difficulty to publish consistently leads to feelings of guilt, frustration or a sense of being overwhelmed.

How I stay consistent is simple: Pick a regular date and stick to it.

This email goes out every Tuesday and Friday. My podcast goes out every Tuesday.

At first, there was no pressure to hit these dates because there was nobody reading this newsletter. There was nobody listening to my podcast.

As soon as the first person subscribed, I felt the pressure to make sure I hit my deadlines.

Not choosing a day of the week or month that I publish gives me too flexibility that I end up doing nothing.

I also made it a rule that no matter what was going on in my life, I would always hit these publish dates (unless it was impossible).

This is how writing and recording became a habit for me.

I've also found that if I pick a publish date, and I consistently miss it, one of two things is to blame:

  1. The publish date is too frequent and doesn't fit in my current schedule.

  2. The reward of publishing is not higher than the pain of missing a deadline.

I can fix number 1 by either making the content faster, getting help, or changing my schedule.

I can fix number 2 by accepting that I may need to let the project go right now, and revisit it in the future, or increase the reward of completing the project.

By choosing, committing and staying consistent on a publish date I've been able to stay on target and get things done.

It's worked for me, so I hope it can also work for you!

WHAT’S BUZZIN’

Last Sunday, July 9th, podcasting turned 20 years old. Podnews wrote a great article about the history of podcasting. “On July 9, 2003 Christopher Lydon and Dave Winer recorded the first podcast, using a recorder and laptop in Harvard University. It was the first piece of audio that would be distributed using an enclosure referenced in an RSS feed. That podcast, now called Open Source, is the longest-running podcast in the world.” -Podnews

Carrd

Almost 1 year ago I started Content Clips. Making a post on social media and a simple one-page site using Carrd… I was able to create a whole new business. What I love about Carrd, besides the fact that it’s free, is how simple it is to use to make great looking sites.

You could use Carrd to make a landing page for your podcast, gather email addresses for your newsletter, or sell something to your audience.
