Which Content Creator Role Do You Identify With Most?

There are two main roles creators play when making content: the expert and the reporter. Understanding these roles and their unique pros and cons can help you determine which you naturally align with and how to make the most of it.

Do you know where January got its name? January is named after Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions in Roman mythology.

In today’s newsletter:

  • Roles: The differences between the expert and reporter.

  • Assets: All sorts of fun and free designs for your next piece of content.

  • Update: iOS 17.3 is out and brings security updates, Instagram and Facebook users get more choices to opt-out, and more.

It's strange going from 2 newsletters a week, to 1.

Not that I feel like I have more time, but I kept thinking I was forgetting something last week. The muscle memory of sending out these emails is real!

I've been thinking about content formats, and how they have an impact on creators.

Particularly, the 2 main roles that creators play: the expert or the reporter.

I attended a Brendon Burchard event around 12 years ago where I first heard this concept.

When you're the expert, you're sharing what you know. You are teaching. You're the authority on the subject you're covering.

When you're the reporter, you're relaying the news. You might be commenting on the topics, but you're not seen as a teacher.

Both have their pros and cons.

The Expert

Pros

  • You can pull from your own unique experience.

  • It'll naturally be easier to create, because it's about what you know.

  • Lends itself well to monetizing through educational programs.

Cons

  • Imposter syndrome is more frequent. Thoughts of, "Who am I to say this?" are common.

  • Unless the topic is urgent, your audience might not find the topics timely.

  • Boredom can set in, because it's not challenging you.

Examples of the expert: Alex Hormozi, Tony Robbins, Brené Brown, Adam Grant, and Gabor Maté.

The Reporter

Pros

  • Your content is relevant to what's in the news.

  • If it's in the news, there's likely a wide audience for what you're talking about.

  • Lends itself to working with brands that want to be seen as the "best thing right now."

Cons

  • Your content is only as interesting as the events that are happening.

  • If nothing interesting is happening, then it's difficult to create interesting content.

  • You can only plan out your content so far.

Examples of the reporter: Marques Brownlee, Lex Fridman, Heather McDonald, Anderson Cooper, and Lewis Howes.

Of course, just because someone is generally reporting on something, doesn't mean that they can't be an expert in the subject. It's just that they are generally relaying information to the audience, in a different way that isn't in the form of lessons and frameworks.

Which one do you identify with the majority of the time? The expert or reporter?
