🧐 Do You Believe These Podcasting Myths? Let's Clear the Air

A recent study of 13,000 Icelanders has helped scientists pinpoint a genetic variant that shapes whether a person's voice sounds high. Rósa Signý GĆsladóttir, a geneticist and linguist, said, 'This is the first time we know of a genetic variant that is really, truly affecting voice pitch across a large population.' All I know is that if my jeans are too tight, my voice sounds higher too…

Podcasting Myths

Today on the podcast, I shared 5 podcasting myths.

The myths that I cover:

  • Oversaturation

  • Expensive equipment

  • Specific formats

  • Money

  • Number of listeners to be successful

One of the things that I didn't cover was the myth of needing technical skills.

You don’t need deep knowledge of technical skills to be a successful podcaster.

But I do think you need a basic understanding of best practices.

For example, last weekend I was talking with a podcaster at a birthday dinner for a mutual friend.

This host was a busy entrepreneur and had been hosting his show for 2 years.

He had published around 100 episodes. No real goal other than stay consistent and have conversations that he hopes people might find interesting.

Later that night, I looked up his show on social media, and Spotify.

Because of the audio quality, they were unlistenable. Literally, couldn’t hear most of the words being said.

I could see from the social media clips what the issue was. He had the microphones pointed in the wrong direction.

My best guess is he was thinking that by pointing the microphone down and away it would pick up everything in the room…giving him and his guests the ability to be recorded with less microphones.

The type of microphone he was using, you needed to be speaking a couple inches away, directly into it.

Have you ever had someone accidentally call you while the phone was in their pocket? That's what his episodes sound like.

Around 100 episodes. All with this issue.

TRENDING

Thousands of Reddit’s communities have now gone dark as part of a coordinated protest. As of writing this, it’s too early to know what kind of effects this will have on Reddit’s pricing plans for API access. Reddit crashed briefly due to the blackout. According to Reddit, ā€œA significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue.ā€

Trendspotting

Last week I mentioned the ā€œ4 U’s of Copywritingā€: Useful, Urgent, Unique and Ultra-Specific.

One of the best ways to nail this is by looking at what people are talking about right now. A free tool to find these trends is by using Google Trends.

Here’s how I suggest using it:

  • Type in a term that has a relatively stable and consistent search volume.

  • Search another term to see how it stacks up against your first term that you searched.

This will help you get a better gauge if people are actively looking for the thing you are thinking about covering.
