Ever wonder how to outsource your social media and marketing without losing your unique voice? It can be quite a challenge to have someone else ‘act’ as you, right?
Imagine this - your social media manager posts a quote card on Instagram, attributing words to you that you’ve never uttered.
The confusion and critiques start building up in the comments…
Not only are you frustrated about cleaning up a mess you didn't make, but now you also face the task of rebuilding trust with the audience you’ve invested so much in.
Here are some quick recommendations from someone who’s seen both sides of the coin:
Trust and Accountability
Firstly, only outsource to someone who understands your mission, has your best interests at heart, and is open to feedback.
Trust is earned slowly and can be destroyed in an instant.
Avoid setting them up to fail, while still letting them do their job.
In the beginning, a 1-3 month trial period is ideal. This time allows for feedback and helps them understand why you do things the way that you do.
Set Boundaries
Secondly, the person you’re outsourcing to doesn’t need absolute freedom; they need guardrails.
What is absolutely off-limits?
What is "flexible" and open to interpretation?
Clearly communicate the dos and don’ts, and provide examples.
A proficient social media manager will document these guidelines, reference and continue to update them.
Lastly, some of the best social media managers I’ve worked with have been so cautious about making mistakes on their client's account that they play it too safe, which results in dull content.
There’s a healthy balance between being hyper-aware and fearing mistakes.
Clear communication is the rising tide that lifts all boats.
